Flora Still Life

James Clegg, Curator of Rice Gallery in Edinburgh, about the work of Lois Weinberger:
"Your garden, when it is cultivated, when it's well looked after, it's the antithesis of nature, it's ruly, it's bounded, it's all laid out on a human scale. Things are categorised, things have their place. Whereas for Lois, nature operates in a very different and often unseen and invisible kind of way...
In Weinberger's work, weeds can symbolise the other, the alien, freedom and pure nature.
Such a discussion inspired me to collect weed removals to create a Floral Still Life. When the spikes turn into petals, and when such tool for expelling weeds "blooms" with vitality, these satirical "flowers" make me rethink how humans define the boundaries of nature on our own scale.
